► LHASA & TIBET IN PHOTOS

For those that take the time to reach this high altitude province Tibet has some of the most amazing sights and atmosphere in China. It is genuinely like no other destination. So sit back and enjoy this slideshow of the highlights we can arrange trips to in fabulous Tibet.

The Potala is perhaps one of the world’s most incredible structures and dominates Lhasa. Home to successive Dalai Lama’s over the centuries it houses some extraordinary treasures and is an unmissable highlight of any visit to Tibet.

The Jokhang is considered to be the most sacred temple in all of Tibet and is located in the centre of Lhasa’s old town. Visited daily by people from all over Tibet the temple and the surrounding Kora is also a fantastic place to people watch.

Headed up by the Jokhang Temple is the large traditional square known as Barkhor. The square attracts many pilgrims and is part of the Kora which runs round the temple. A superb place to relax in the cafes and restaurants and watch life go by.

Gyantse's Fortress on the way to Kathmandu via Everest

Famed for its precipitously located fortress with commanding views over the valley leading to Lhasa as well as the giant Khumbum, the largest in Tibet, Gyantse is an overnight stop in it’s own right or as part of the longer trip down to Kathmandu.

Another overnight stop on the way down the Friendship Highway to Kathmandu, Shigatse is also home to the huge Tashilhunpo monastery. It occupies an important strategic location at the confluence of the Brahmaputra river and Nyanchue rivers.

We’ll let you into a secret - the best views of Mt. Everest are from the far less visited Tibetan side of the mountain. A rough and ready high altitude night but the sunset and sunrise make it all worthwhile and the highlight of a Lhasa to Kathmandu trip.

Friendly People, Unspoiled Scenery & Mount Kailash

One of the highlights of any trip to Tibet are the colourful, warm and friendly people who live there. Tibetans are deeply religious with Buddhism guiding their often tough daily lives and so adding a spiritual dimension to any trip here.

Tibet has some of the most dramatic and unspoiled scenery in China. The vistas are expansive and the air often crystal clear. This combinations free the mind and makes the often long distances travelled more than worthwhile - indeed essential.

As well as sacred temple Tibet also has a very sacred mountain in the name of Kailash that is a site of pilgrimage for both Buddhists and Hindus. Remote and difficult to reach the real test comes with the trek that circumnavigates its base that takes a couple of days at high altitude.
