TAI SHAN 泰山 TRAVEL GUIDE

Tai Shan is one of the 5 sacred mountains of Taoism and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is associated with sunrise, birth, and renewal, and is often regarded as the foremost of the five. The temples on its slopes have been a destination for pilgrims for 3,000 years. When climbing the mountain you will be joining an illustrious list including the first Chinese Emperor, Confucius and Mao Zedong. While watching the sun rise, Confucius was quoted as saying “the world is small,” and Mao as saying “the East is red.” Tai Shan is usually visited along with nearby Qufu.

TOP ATTRACTIONS IN TAI SHAN

Many people come to see the sunrise and to do this you will need to either climb up at night or stay in one of the hostels on top of the mountain overnight. Weather permitting it is well worth it. Aside from the sunrise the journey up the mountain is all part of the experience, all 6,293 steps up to the 1,545m peak! There are plenty of places to stop along the way and no shortage of opportunities to by food and drink from the many, clearly super fit, vendors who may follow you.
