Hukou Waterfall 壶口瀑布 Travel Guide

Hukou Waterfall is the second largest in China and, the Chinese say, the only yellow waterfall in the world. It is situated in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, named so because of the vast amount of silt it carries as it carves its way through the Loess Plateau. The Yellow river is also considered the cradle of Chinese civilisation.

It is a waterfall with a difference, that difference being the power of the flow during the rainy season as well as it’s colour. An impressive sight.

The waterfall is the attraction and can be added in easily to any itinerary that also visits Xian or Shaanxi province. The water flow is highest in the summer months but if you can stand the cold the falls are impressive in winter when parts of it freeze into giant yellow icicles.

Hukou Falls can be fitted into any trip that visits Xian and although far from being a mainstream sight it is worth a visit if you want to explore this region of China in more depth.

The only real option is the Hukou Guesthouse if you want to be near the falls.
