China Destinations for the Active
China has some superb options for those wanting a bit of activity and adventure on their holiday there. Such activities are usually found away from the cities so you need to head to the sacred mountains or the more far flung provinces of Tibet, Yunnan and Xinjiang. In the cities themselves it usually comes down to hiring a bike to explore although Beijing offers treks along the wilder sections of the Great Wall.
Adventure in China can be found in Tibet & the Mountains
The sacred mountains offer walkers stunning vistas along often challenging but well kept paths. Probably the most famous include the “plank walk” on Huashan outside of Xian and the “glass road” on Tianmen mountain in the Zhangjiajie region which is full or stunning scenery. Emeishan and Huangshan also offer slightly less extreme but very rewarding walking opportunities.
For climbers there are good options amongst Yangshuo’s karst mountain scenery and for walkers the famous and sometimes hair raising Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan province is an obvious attraction.
Adventure abounds in Tibet with almost any trip outside of Lhasa offering high altitude walking with Everest Base Camp perhaps being the most rewarding experience. Far flung Xinjiang province offers potential desert experiences and the jaw dropping Chinese section of the Karakorum Highway. We hope you enjoy exploring this part of our destination guide.
