Best Time to Visit China
When is the Best time to Plan you China Tour for?
One of the most common questions I get, while working for The China Travel Company, when people are booking China tours is “What is the best time of year to visit China?”
Of course, with China being such a vast country, the weather does vary greatly and one can think of China as a country split into 5 different regions of temperature.
The first region would be the Cold Region covering the very north of the country. The city most likely visited by people on their tour that is in this region would be Harbin. Not surprisingly Harbin is famous for it’s snow and ice festival that runs through January and February.
The second region would be the Mid-Temperature region that includes China’s number one destination and capital city of Beijing. Best time to visit places in this region are April and May or September and October.
Xian home of the Terra Cotta Warriors is best visited in Autumn
Next is the Warm Region, which includes the ancient capital city of Xian – most often visited for the world famous Terra-Cotta warriors. Again Spring and Autumn are the best times to visit with Autumn probably just getting the nod as the best time.
The Sub-Tropical Region is next which includes many of the tourist favourites and greatest countryside China has to offer. Big cities such as Shanghai, Hong Kong and Chengdu fit into this region as well as the epic countryside of Lijiang, Dali, Guilin and Yangshuo. Late March to May and October through November are the peak times to enjoy the ideal weather.
Hainan Island in China's tropical South
Finally we come to the Tropical region which doesn’t include much of China but does cover the beach resort of Sanya on Hainan Island to the south. Weather here is good all year round with the peak season probably falling between September and February.
All in all you can see the diversity of weather across this vast country, so what is my answer to the question at the beginning? Well the answer I always give when someone asks me is Autumn, the weather is good nearly everywhere in China at that time but don’t forget to miss the October holiday and the domestic crowds it brings.
