China's Yunnan Province - Scenery Food and Lovely People

Many people have a picture of what China looks like in their head before they embark on their China tour and for a lot of people that will be the look of Yunnan Province. They may not have even heard of the place or be visiting it on their tour but I always find that those that do are rarely disappointed.

Despite being a picture many of us have in our heads of China it is actually a very diverse multicultural region with only roughly just over half of its people being Han Chinese compared to a national average of about 92%. This, along with the stunning scenery that’s everywhere to be found, is probably it’s greatest charm.

Yi, Bai, Hani, Zhuang, Dai, Miao, Hui and Tibetan peoples all reside here in this province that borders on to Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam all share a border with it as do Tibet, Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi. This all makes for a completely different feel to anywhere else in China.

Kunming, Dali and Lijiang are all highlights of Yunnan province

The capital, Kunming, in itself is much like other Chinese cities but only a short ride out and you will see the magnificent Stone Forest. Further afield you can visit the delights of the ancient town of Lijiang with it’s cobbled streets or Dali, another old town with the magnificent Erhai Lake nearby. It doesn’t end there though, high up in the mountains you can visit Shangri-La, a Tibetan town that feels like it rests in the heavens.

Being one of the most fertile areas of China also makes for some amazing food with the vegetables probably being better here than anywhere else in the country. All in all if you go to visit Yunnan on your China tour you can guarantee you won’t be leaving disappointed!
