Cultural Spectaculars to see in the Evenings in China

A common question I get when people are looking to book China Tours is “Are there any shows that are worth seeing?”. There’s obviously so much to see in the day time in a country as vast and as varied as China but what is there to do in the evenings?

Although you’ll see a thriving bar culture in places like Beijing and Shanghai, this is still quite a new scene and ,amongst the locals, something that only a small percent of Chinese would consider doing and usually the younger generations. For the Chinese KTV (karaoke), dancing and restaurants fulfill this part of their social experience with people often going to a restaurant for the whole evening, drinking and eating with their friends.

Impressions Lui Sanjie Show in Yangshuo a highlight of China

One thing the Chinese do especially well and I would whole heartedly recommend adding into any China tour is a good show. For anyone who watched the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, there can be no doubt of this! In fact the man that was responsible for those productions, Zhang Yimou, is Mainland China’s most famous film director and has created shows depicting minority life in China called “Impressions”.

The most popular of these shows is to be found in Yangshuo and is called Impressions Liu Sanjie and depicts the life around the river Li and is named after a mythical folk singer of the Zhuang minority. The stunning scenery makes up a natural stage with the river, something Zhang Yimou is famous for in his films as well. It is a spectacular of mammoth proportions utilizing literally hundreds of performers and is a real highlight of any trip to the ever popular Yangshuo area near Guilin.

Xian's Tang Dynasty show of music and dance

There are many other notable shows, as someone with a strong interest in music, I enjoyed the Tang Dynasty show in Xian which has an orchestra that uses many instruments that are not in common use anymore. Another great one to see is the Chinese Acrobatics show in either Beijing or Shanghai, something the Chinese do exceptionally well.

All in all, it’s certainly worth enjoying some of China’s amazing culture in the evenings as well as in the day on any tour of China.
